Patient dies due to high pressure oxygen supply at MRI lab facility in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: A 55-year old man died here in medical imaging centre, as high flow of oxygen burst his lungs, intestine and urinal organ.

Vitthalbhai Radadia, resident of Nikol area of city was hospitalized in Satellite area based Medilink hospital. Last night the hospital referred him to Suryam imaging centre for MRI.

Vitthalbhai was taken to Suryam imaging centre with an attendant of Medilink hospital. Patient’s relatives too accompanied them.

According to Vitthalbhai’s son, a technician opened the valve of oxygen cylinder in such a way that high velocity flow of oxygen pumped into Vitthalbhai’s body. Vitthalbhai’s lungs, intenstine, urinal organ ballooned and burst immediately. His mouth was bleeding. He died on the spot.

Vitthalbhai’s friend Arvind Patel said the Medilink hospital’s attendant had full knowledge of the event, but neither the imaging centre nor the hospital were sympathetic.

‘We went to imaging centre, but we were told, do whatever you can, we have enough connections at higher levels, you can’t do anything,’ said Arvind Patel.

‘Neither Suryam imaging centre, nor hospital was ready to accept mistake. The hospital staff told us to pay the bills and leave with dead body,’ he further added.

He said the hospital mandates to purchase medicines only from its internal store. Rs 8 pill is sold for Rs 50-52 at their store, but one can’t purchase medicines from outside.

Vitthalbhai’s son demanded that police should check video footage of Suryam imaging centre. Postmortem of patient should be done under video surveillance.

He said, at 3.00 am, the hospital management was pressurizing to make payment and take away the deadbody.

‘We called Satellite police station but they argued that the case was pertaining to Nikol police station as we are resident of Nikol area. However the incident took place in Satellite area and therefore Nikol police was not in picture. We had to call police control room thrice to file complaint. We had to utilize ‘connections’ to get even a copy of panchnama from Satellite police station,’ victim’s son further said. ‘
