April 11, 2018
Ahmedabad:
The Gujarat High Court today sought information from the state government about the procedure adopted for change in name of a city hearing a PIL objecting to use of ‘Amdavad’ in stead of ‘Ahmedabad’ for this historic and largest city of the state.
The counsel of the PIL petitioner said that his client has urged the court to issue instructions about non-use of the name Amdavad for Ahmedabad. He has said that Ahmedabad was the official name of the city. It was this name which was mentioned the official documents. So the use of Amdavad was not legally correct.
He also said that UNESCO which had last year recognized the city as the first world heritage city of India also uses Ahmedabad for it.
The court of Chief Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice V M Pancholi has sought information from the state government about the procedure of name change of a city and other details.
