Gujarat governor gives assent to 11 bills passed during budget session, sends 3 to president

Gujarat Governor O P Kohli today gave his assent to 11 of the total 14 government bills passed in the assembly during recent budget session.

Kohli however sent the remaining three bills to the president of India as these bills have issues on which the center also has power to make laws.

The government approved the 11 bills including Gujarat Police (Amendment) bill, VAT (Amendment) bill, Gujarat stamp (Amendment) bill, Gujarat Money Lenders (Amendment) bill and the ones related to Road Safety Authority and setting up of private universities among others.

The 3 bills sent to the President by the governor are the Gujarat SC/ST and OBC (Regulation of Issuance of and Verification of Caste Certificates) Bill that provides for punitive measures and jail term of up to 3 years for use of fake caste certificates, the Registration (Gujarat Amendment) Bill about change in the central act pertaining to registration of property and the Gujarat Prevention of Fragmentation and Consolidation of Holdings (Amendment) Bill that is about amendment in the state Act of 1947, to eliminate discrepancies in imposition of fine on land owners for the transfer or partition of their land.

Notably during the first budget session of 14th Gujarat assembly which was held between February 19 to March 28 saw the passage of a total of 14 government bills.

The governor has also given his approval to the appropriation bill regarding this year’s budget. With governor’s assent all the 11 bills have become Acts. The remaining 3 will have to wait for presidents nod for the same.
