DGP suspends then CID Crime Inspector Sheikh in Rs 2 crore bribe case

Gandhinagar: Director General of Police, Gujarat has suspended CID Crime’s then Police Inspector II Sheikh who is accused of demanding Rs 2-5 crore bribe. Anti Corruption Bureau(ACB) has filed complaint against Sheikh after court order. Sheikh had approached the Gujarat High Court seeking anticipatory bail to evade arrest in bribe case. The High Court has however rejected Sheikh’s plea.

ACB had filed case against Sheikh when Sheikh was IB officer in May 2017.

During 2013-16, a Pan Masala company called Dharampal Satyapal and Co had done Rs 916 crore business but didn’t pay VAT worth Rs 190 crore. VAT officers had filed case against 27 employees of company.

Sheikh was in CID(crime) and investigating the case in 2016. A case in metro court in Ahmedabad was filed against Sheikh by one of 27 accused Rajendra Keshwani whose lawyer Hitesh Gupta alleged that Sheikh had called him in CID office in Meghaninagar area of city on March 28 2016 and offered to not arrest Keshwani if Rs 5 crore bribe paid, as all other accused had paid him the same amount. Sheikh had claimed that CID Crime DG Pramod Kumar was demanding it. As Gupta refused to pay Rs 5 crore bribe, Sheikh asked for Rs 2 crore. Gupta had recorded his talks with Sheikh in person and on phone and produced same before Metro court. On court’s order, Sheikh was booked.
