DRI busts pharma factory, seizes 6.7 crores ready for dispatch and over two tonnes of loose Tramadol Tablets, 2 arrested

Ahmedabad:

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized around 6.7 crore Tramadol tablets, a psychotropic substance used as an euphoric drug by ISIS terrorist and people in African countries, from the premises of a pharmaceutical firm in Sarigam area of Vapi in Valsad district which was involved in its illicit manufacturing.

Over tow tonnes of loose Tramadol and other substances and machinery all including worth over Rs 50 crores was also recovered from the factory.

A statement by DRI here today said that specific intelligence was developed by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Zonal Unit, Ahmedabad that one Sarigam, Valsad based pharmaceutical firm was involved in illicit manufacturing of Tramadol, a Psychotropic Substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Acting upon the said intelligence officers of DRI, Surat and DRI, Vapi raided the said firm and seized 6.7 crores Tramadol Tablets/Capsules, 2129 Kgs. of loose Tramadol Tablets/Capsules and 870 Kgs. of Tramadol Hydrochloride Salt. Besides, machinery used for manufacturing of this Psychotropic Substance has also been seized. DRI officers have also apprehended two partners of the said firm.

Tramadol is a synthetic opiod drug which is very popular and in demand in African Nations like Nigeria, Ghana etc. where a large section of population is addicted to this drug as its consumption generates euphoria. The youth abuse it for sexual and energy purposes and often it is added to some drinks or beverages to give a heightened ‘feeling high’ sensation and pleasure. This drug is reportedly also very popular among ISIS terrorists in the War-Zones of Middle-East. ISIS fighters use this drug to overcome pain and fatigue. That is why it is sometimes called “Fighter Drug”. Looking into the widespread misuse of Tramadol, Government of India has included this drug into the Schedule of Psychotropic Substances under the NDPS Act vide a Notification last month.
