Gujarat Police probing into viral videos that created social tension in recent months: DGP

Gandhinagar: Director General of Police(DGP) of Gujarat Police, Shivanand Jha today addressing a press conference in capital Gnadhinagar said, police will probe into recent spurt in videos circulated on social media that cause harm to social fabrics.

Jha said Information Technology(IT) act section has been applied in the case of Mahesana dalit atrocity. If someone had made the video viral to disturb social fabrics, he/she will face action. He said two mobile phones are recovered from two accused and they are sent to Forensic Science Laboratory(FSL).

He said, recently, such offenses take place and video clips of such incidents are uploaded online and made viral. We are going to probe in the direction that who are the elements, trying to misuse social media to create tension between social groups.

Jha said, police has arrested two suspects in Mahesana atrocity case in which a dalit boy was thrashed allegedly for wearing mojdi shoes. Jha said search for two more suspects is on. He said police bandobast has been given to victim family.

Jha said police will carry out village visitation drive for three months. Police men will visit the villages in the evenings and hold meetings. Villages with record of social tension will be chosen for visits. shoul

It should be mentioned here that in last few months, there have been series of incidents in which upper cast persons beat up lower caste person and capture the incident in video. They then make such video viral. As this is happening regularly nowadays, the government is interested to know whether someone is behind series of such incidents.

Jha said, Ahmedabad Police’s Cyber Cell has been given video clips to probe into their origin and how they were made viral.
