Heavy rainfall in South Gujarat, one dead, life thrown out of gear in Navsari and other places

Gandhinagar: Even as heavy rain has lashed South and Central Gujarat along with parts of Saurashtra on the third consecutive day today and Borsad in Anand district saw over 7 inches while Dharmapur in Valsad district, Chikhli in Navsari and Bardoli in Surat district has seen over 6 inches of rain and Navsari which has seen over 7 inches of rain in the last 24 hours has seen 5 more inches of rain from 8am to 4 pm throwing life out of gear and prompting the authorities to transfer 600 people from low-lying areas to safer places.

One person in Bardoli died of drowning due to flooding of Koyali creek (khadi).

Several roads including state and national highways have seen water logging. Some of the causeways were also submerged. Rivers across South Gujarat have surged. 4 doors of Madhvan dam have been opened.

From 8am to 10pm today Borsad has seen the maximum of 180 mm, Bardoli 152 mm of rain Navsari 148 Chikhli 166 Khergam 145 Jalalpor 134 Dharmapur 168 Wagahi 121 , Sojitra, Tarapur and Petlad in Ananad district 119, 117 and 98 mm respectively, Visavadar 93, Vasanda in Navsari 110 mm, Vaso in Kheda 105mm and Vyara 89 mm. By 10 pm today 142 talukas have seen rain of which 67 have recorded over one inch of rain while 35 over 2 inches. Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred in central Gujarat district including Anand and Kheda in the evening.

Ahmedabad saw a few spells of light drizzles to medium intensity rain too which were likely to continue through the night. Dholka recorded around 1 and a half inch of rain.

In the last 24 hours ending at 8 am today, 137 talukas of 25 districts have seen rain of which maximum 178mm was in Navsari, 176 mm in Mahuva (Surat), 169 mm in Jalapor, 142 mm in Valod of Tapi and 126mm in Valsad.

The state has seen over 22 % of its seasonal rain so far.

One youth identified as Usman a resident of Islampura in Hidayatnagar area of Bardoli today died of drowning. He and another person were washed away due to flooding of Koyali creek beside which their house was situated. The other one was somehow saved but Usman died in hospital after getting fished out of the creek.

Life was thrown out of gear in Navsari and Jalapore where several low lying areas were severely water logged owing to continuous downpour. Primary schools were closed at both the places today.

Meanwhile heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue for next few days even as 3 systems were active over and in neighborhood of Gujarat. One upper air cyclonic circulation was over South Gujarat and neighborhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level. Other such circulation lies over South Pakistan and adjoining West Rajasthan between 1.5 and 2.1 km above mean sea level. One Morning East West Shear Zone along Latitude 18 degree north also persists.
