Ahmedabad: Akhil Gujarat Truck Transport Association has today evening issues a circular, stating that the 8-day old nationwide truck and transport strike has been called off, in accordance with the directives of the All India Motor Transport Congress. The issues for which the strike call was given have been resolved and truckers will resume duties shortly. The development took place after Transport Congress’s meeting with union minister Nitin Gadkari today.
The All India Motor Transport Congress said the government had promised to consider their demands. Road Transport Secretary YS Malik thanked the stakeholders for suspending their protest.
The transporters demanded a reduction in central and state levies on diesel by bringing it under the ambit of the Goods and Services Tax, a reduction in third-party premiums and oppose the toll collection system, which they claim causes a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh crore annually.
“Their role in keeping the economy on track is integral,” Malik said. “We will try our best to solve their problems at the earliest.”
