Mahatma Gandhi statue at Income Tax circle in Ahmedabad to be shifted to Vadaj circle
August 03, 2018
Ahmedabad: A famous statue of Mahatma Gandhi which is at present located right in the middle of Income Tax cross roads will be shifted to Vadaj circle soon due to the ongoing construction of fly over.
The statue of Mahatma Gandhi made by Kanti Patel was installed at Income Tax cross roads on Ashram Road in year 1969 due to proximity to Gujarat Vidyapith. As the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) is constructing a flyover on Income Tax cross roads, the statue is going to be shifted to Vadaj circle nearby which is located between the Gandhi Ashram and Gujarat Vidpaith on Ashram Road.
Suggestion to shift the statue to Vadaj circle was made by Gandhian institutions including Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram and Gujarat Vidyapith.
The new place of statue is close to Dandi bridge, associated with famous Dandi march of 1930s. In fact Gandhiji’s statue is in posture of walking with stick in hand.
With construction of flyover and shifting of Gandhi statue, Income Tax cross roads will no more remain a popular place for protest on various issues. Mahatma Gandhi statue here has seen number of protest programmes in the past ranging from students’ protests to political protests.
