Monsoon in action in Gujarat again, heavy to very heavy rain at several places including Ahmedabad city

In a big respite to Gujarat, the monsoon as predicted has become re-activate in the state with 141 talukas of 24 districts seeing rain in last 24 hours ending 8 am today and from 8am to 8pm today as many as 230 taukas across the state including many in Kutch district also saw rain with maximum 150 mm (around 6 inches) in Kapadvanj in Kheda district.

There were reports of at least 3 deaths in rain related incidents. One person died in Aravalli district in Pahadpur near Modassa due to lightening while one person each died in Bujar and Moti Sadhaki villages in Qant taluka of Chhota Udepur district due to collapse of two houses.

Ahmedabad city has seen an average 102 mm of rain today till 8 pm with the New West Zone recording maximum 118mm. Seven underpasses of the city were closed at different times in the city but were later opened one after the other as the rain stopped in the after noon. These were Usmanpura, Stadium, Mithakali, Parimal, Kubernagar, Akhbarnagar and Shahibaug underpasses. The AMC main control room received more than 14 complaints of severe water logging and 15 of falling of trees during the rain which at times was accompanied with strong winds. East zone of the city has seen 102 mm, West Zone 106 mm, East Zone 103mm,, North Zone 85mm and South Zone 85mm. People though were delighted at revival of monsoon after a long time yet they had to face difficulties also in plush areas of Ahmedabad city like Judges Bungalow road in Bodavkdev, Vastrapur and Airport road etc due to water logging on roads.

A total of 51 talukas have seen over 2 inches of rain till 8 pm today while in the last 24 hours (ending 8am today), 25 talukas had seen 2 to 5.5 inches of rain and 33 around one inch (Maximum 137mm in Chhota Udepur).

Today Godhara in Panchmahal district has seen 125mm, Kalol in Gandhinagar 111mm, Sanand in Ahmedabad district 110mm, Matar in Kheda 104 mm, Balassinor in Mahisagar 95mm, Jetpur Pavi in Chhota Udepur 93mm, Galteshwar in Kheda district 89mm, Sojitra in Anand 94mm.

Among other prominent rain receiving places were Malpur in Aravalli district 88mm, Waghai in Dangs 88mm, Khambat (81mm Tarapur 84 mm , Nadiad 73mm, Vagra in Bharuch 81mm, Dahegam in Gandhinagar 77mm, Dabhoi in Vadodara 58mm,, Karjan 56mm, Gandhinagar city 45mm. Many parts of rain scanty Kutch and North Gujarat also saw around one to 2 inches of rain. Bhachau in Kutch recorded 57mm while Gandhidham 37mm.

The rain today is almost universal accept with all the five regions seeing some rain. Districts in North Gujarat have also seen half to over 2 inches of rain.

The met has given Heavy to very heavy rains warning for tomorrow as well which was very likely at isolated places in the districts of South Gujarat region namely Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara and in the districts of Saurarshtra- Kutch namely Devbhumi Dwarka , Porbandar. It intensity will decrease substantially from day after tomorrow. Meanwhile due to rains for two consecutive days the temperatures across Gujarat have also gone down substantailly. In Ahmedabad the maximum temperature was only 25.6 °C which was 6.4 °C below normal. At other places also it has gone down by 4 to 7 degree Celsius.

The average monsoon rain percentage has crossed 59% mark so far. Despite cases of water logging at various places the rain is being welcomed by the people as if it rains like this for a few days it would can end the looming water crisis to some extent. The rain is being caused caused by a well marked low pressure area over north west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining East Rajasthan with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwards.
