Railways transport trucks loaded with goods from Gujarat to South India in new Ro-Ro service

Surat: Western Railway has started transporting trucks full of goods through train on Vapi – Mangalore route.
First such train was operated from Karambeli goods shade(near Vapi) to Surathkal(near Mangalore) in Karnataka with 50 trucks loaded with construction material, drum oil, stone powder, tiles, sheets, glucose bottles, medicines, paint, tyre powder, lime powder, marble etc.
The train had arrived at Karambeli with trucks from Surathkal goods shade of Konkan railway on Thursday. It returned from Karambeli with 50 trucks on Saturday. Another train with 43 trucks left on Sunday.
This initiative will decrease burden on highways. It will also save toll tax and fuel expenses for transporters. It will be environmental friendly mode of transport.
As per an estimate, daily 1,000 trucks leave for South India from Vapi. Only disel cost in such journey is around Rs 24,000 while railway is offering ro-ro service in just Rs 17,000.
