Munaf Patel, Gujarat medium pacer who played important role in India’s second ICC world cup victory, announces retirement from cricket

Bharuch: Gujarat born former Team India Cricketer Munaf Patel, who was among the star performers during the second ICC world-cup victory of India in 2011, announced his retirement from the game today.

35 year old Munaf, basically a medium fast bowler, was born in Ikhar village of Bharuch district in Gujarat on July 12, 1983 and has played all form of cricket.

Popularly known as ‘Ikhar express’ in Gujarat, Munaf has represented India in 13 Tests (35 wickets), 70 ODIs (84 wickets) and 3 T20Is (4 wickets). He had made made his test debut in 2006 against England at Mohali and interestingly also played his last one in 2011 against England at Cardiff. He had made his one day debut in 2006 itself.

In the 2011 world cup which India won on its home-turf, Munaf had taken 8 wickets in as many matches and was third highest wicket taker from the team.

He has also played 63 matches in seven IPL sessions and taken 74 wickets. Apart from team India Munaf has also played for Asia XI, Baroda, Gujarat, Gujarat Lions, India Green, Indian Board President’s XI, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals.

He has said that he now aspires to become a full fledged cricket coach.
