UK court orders extradition of Vijay Mallya, gives 14-day time for appeal, Jaitley says a great day for India
December 10, 2018
New Delhi: A UK court today ordered the extradition of liquor baron Vijay Mallya to India. Mallya is wanted for alleged bank loan fraud and money laundering charges in India.
Westminster Magistrates’ Court Chief Magistrate Judge Emma Arbuthnot in her verdict said that Mallya can be extradited to India to stand trial on the charges brought by the CBI and ED. Mallya was, however, given 14 days to appeal against the verdict.
The 62-year-old former Kingfisher Airlines boss is on bail since his arrest on an extradition warrant in April last year.
Reacting to this development, Finance minister Arun Jaitley in his tweet said: Great Day for India. No one who cheats India will go scot free. The Judgement of UK’s Court is welcome. An offender benefited during the UPA. The NDA brings him to book.
