Single helpline number 112 for all emergency services from tomorrow; effective in 7 districts of Gujarat in first phase

Gandhinagar: People in emergency need across the country shall have one single number to dial – 112 – a new number for national emergency response system, which shall be launched nationally by union home minister Rajnath Singh from Delhi on February 19. In Gujarat, the Chief Minister will launch this helpline number from assembly helipad ground.

A new helpline number will be effective in Gujarat in the first phase across seven districts namely Gir-Somnath, Devbhumi Dwarka, Morbi, Chhota Udepur Botad, Arvalli and Mahisagar with effect from February 24.

With this service in effect, the needy people will have to dial 112 number instead of remembering/dialing multiple helpline numbers such as 100 number for police, 101 number for fire, 108 for ambulance, 1070 for disaster management, 181 for Abhayam women’s helpline and 1962 for animal helpline.

The Centre has given more than Rs. 11 crore sum for smooth implementation of 112 number service.

As the new helpline number will take some time to familiarize, the existing helpline numbers shall continue to serve needy people in Gujarat. The calls on existing helpline numbers will automatically transfer to 112 service.

GVI EMRI facility at Kathwada near Ahmedabad will continue to serve 112 number service as it has state-of-the-art infrastructure in place.
