422 km of open power lines replaced with MVCC cable in Surat in 2 years: Gujarat govt

Gandhinagar: Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai informed the Gujarat Assembly that, to reduce power outages and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to farms in Gujarat, the state government is replacing open agricultural power lines with advanced MVCC (Medium Voltage Covered Conductor) cables. These MVCC cables, with their special insulation cover, are safer and more reliable than traditional open wires.

The minister further stated that, over the past two years, a total of 422 km of lines in Surat district at a cost of ₹39.17 crore, 241 km in Navsari district at a cost of ₹22.47 crore, 91 km in Panchmahal district at a cost of ₹9.03 crore, 88 km in Chhota Udepur district at a cost of ₹8.70 crore, and 86 km in Narmada district at a cost of ₹8.19 crore have been converted to MVCC lines. Similar works are also underway in other districts.

Highlighting the impact, Minister Desai noted that coated power lines have helped reduce electricity interruptions in the state by 70% to 80%. In particular, regions such as Saurashtra and Kutch—which often face power disruptions due to cyclones and salinity-laden winds causing wire breakages or short circuits—are now benefiting from the installation of MVCC cables.

The use of these cables has significantly reduced power theft, accidents caused by contact with tall tree branches and birds, and instances of power outages, thereby making the electricity supply more stable and safer. Additionally, this technology benefits the environment, as it reduces the need for excessive tree-cutting and helps protect the lives of birds and animals.

Minister Desai emphasized that adopting MVCC technology marks an important step towards modernizing Gujarat’s power infrastructure and enhancing safety standards. DeshGujarat
