Over 10,000 gram panchayats in Gujarat to go to polls in December

Ahmedabad:Around 10,200 gram (village) panchayats across Gujarat would go to polls in December to elect their representatives, State Election Commission (SEC) announced today.

However, the Commission is yet to finalise the exact dates for these elections.

“Around 10,200 gram panchayats across the state would go to polls in December this year as their five-year tenure is ending in that month. We will announce the final dates in coming days,” SEC Secretary MV Joshi said.

The exercise to prepare and publish the final voter list for these gram panchayats has already begun, he said.

As per the figures of the Panchayats Department, there are a total 14,017 gram panchayats across the state, while the number of villages stood at 18,584.

Of these Panchayats, the tenures of around 10,200 is ending in December.

Gram panchayats polls are not fought on party symbols and candidates need to contest in their personal capacity. In these polls, voters elect one sarpanch and a specified number of panchayat members who manage village level-related matters and handle local projects.
