Civic body approves GIS/GPS-based tree census in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) approved a proposal on Friday to hire a consultant for a GIS/GPS-based tree census and mapping project in the city. This census comes 12 years after the last one, held in 2012.

The consulting firm will be compensated at a rate of Rs 7.89 per tree, with the total project cost estimated at Rs 5 crore. Only trees with a minimum trunk circumference of 6 inches and a height of 10 feet will be included in the count.

In 2012, during the first tree census, Ahmedabad had an area of 466 sq km and recorded a total of 6,18,000 trees, representing a green cover of 4.66%. The city’s area has since expanded to 480.88 sq km, and 75.43 lakh trees have been planted by the AMC in the past five years. DeshGujarat
