Object placed on track derails Ahmedabad bound Sabarmati Express train in UP; All passengers safe

Kanpur: In the early hours of August 17, 2024, 20 coaches of the Sabarmati Express, en route from Varanasi to Ahmedabad, derailed in a block section between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations, close to Govindpuri Station. The incident occurred around 2:30 AM near Kanpur railway station as the train was en route to Jhansi.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, according to railway officials. The version of engine driver suggests that the derailment was caused when a boulder struck the train’s engine. The locomotive’s cattle guard sustained significant damage as a result.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav tweeted: ‘The engine of Sabarmati Express (Varanasi to Amdavad) hit an object placed on the track and derailed near Kanpur at 02:35 am today.

Sharp hit marks are observed. Evidence is protected. IB and UP police are also working on it.

No injuries to passengers or staff. Train arranged for passengers for onward journey to Amdavad.’

Meanwhile around dozen trains were cancelled or diverted due to the incident. Arrangements of chai, water and nashta were done on the spot by the Railways and the local administration in the morning. The passengers were boarded in buses, other road vehicles and a special Memu train sent from Kanpur central station. A special train was also being arranged to carry the passengers stuck at the drailment site to their destinations. DeshGujarat
