Patan man held for posing as CID officer, harassing & spying on a woman from Surat

Patan: Singanpore police  of Surat have arrested a man named Tarun Barot from Patan for harassing a woman in Surat and pressuring her to marry him. Additionally, the man had a spy following the woman after she refused to marry him. The woman later filed a complaint with Singanpore police, which led to the arrest of the rickshaw driver who was spying on her, as well as the main accused, Barot.

According to the complaint, the woman met Tarun during a community function in Vadodara on June 2. Tarun introduced himself as a political influencer, claiming connections with BJP and Congress leaders. He told the woman to contact him if she faced any difficulties and took her mobile number. Starting on July 3, 2024, Tarun began calling the woman, insisting that she marry him. He would keep her on video calls for up to 12 hours at a time. If the woman did not answer his calls, Tarun would obtain the phone numbers of her relatives and contact them, demanding they give the phone to her.

Even after the woman reported the matter to the police, Tarun continued his harassment, deploying a spy to follow her. The spy would take photos of the woman and send them to Tarun.

On August 15, the accused called the police control room, posing as a CID Crime Police Inspector, and falsely identified the woman from Singanpore as a wanted criminal. As a result, the police went to her house and even visited her son’s factory for an investigation. Following these incidents, the police registered two cases against Tarun Barot for filing false complaints and one case for harassing the woman, bringing the total to three cases.

Later, the woman contacted the Inspector of Singanpore Police Station and informed them that she was being spied on. After surveillance, the police nabbed the spy, identified as Mayur Sonwane, a resident of the Dindoli area. He worked for Ajay Rai, who runs a confidential investigation and detective agency in the Atlanta Shopping Center, Althan. Mayur was paid Rs 1,000 per day to follow the woman.

Currently, the police have arrested the spy and are conducting further investigations. The police have registered three cases against Tarun Barot, who was arrested late at night. Following his arrest, Tarun claimed to be unwell and was moved to the hospital for treatment. DeshGujarat
