Amul A-2 Kankrej cow milk price to remain unchanged

Anand (Gujarat): Despite the hike in the price of all other categories of Amul Milk by Rs 2 per liter in Gujarat from tomorrow, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation(GCMMF), which owns brand Amul, will not make any change in the price of the A-2 kakrej cow milk launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December last year.

The Amul Deshi A-2 milk of Kanrej cow of Banas Dairy, one of the 17 dairies under GCMMF, contains the A-2 type of protein which is not found in milk of other cow breed. The A-2 protein is healthy and is said to be beneficial in diabetes and other diseases. It is also deemed very useful for children.

A GCMMF official today said that the price of A-2 milk sold in bottles of 500ml at Rs 35 (per bottle or 500ml) will not be hiked.

Prime Minister Modi had launched the milk during his visit to Deesa in Banaskantha district on December 10, when he had also launched some other products of Banas Dairy including honey and inaugurated a cheese plant.

Meanwhile in third price-rise in as many years, Amul Milk will become costlier by up to Rs 2 per liter across Gujarat from tomorrow. Apart from A-2 milk which is currently supplied in a smaller quantity here, other categories like Diamond, Shakti, Gold, Cow, Taza, Tea Special, Slim&Trim etc would be costlier. 500 ml pouch of Amul Diamond will cost Rs 27, Gold Rs 26, Shakti Rs 24 Cow Rs 22, Taza Rs 20 and Slim and Trim will cost Rs 18 from tomorrow, with a rise of Rs 1 per pouch The last price hike was in June 2016 and prior to that in May 2014.

Amul Dairy MD K Ratnam said that initially the price rise would be for Gujarat but the same hike would be effected across the country soon. He said that the increase was equal to the rise in procurement prices. ‘The input cost of cattle growers had increased prompting us to raise the procurement prices recently. The increase in procurement prices was also around Rs 2 per liter which has now been adjusted in the form of the price rice for the consumers,’ he said.

Meanwhile, the price rise which was expected in the wake of the recent increase in procurement price will affect Gujaratis the most where it is the unquestionable market leader.

On the other hand the rise in the milk prices, which is said to be over 20th in almost a decade, will pinch the common people who had faced the punch of recent hike in domestic cooking gas prices.

The cost of other dairy products of brand Amul including butter, Ghee, butter milk, ice-creams which was raised some time ago, would remain the same.
