95 lakh metric tonnes of waste removed from Pirana dumping site; 35 acres land cleared
September 20, 2023
Ahmedabad:The ‘Pirana Bio-Mining Project’ is a classic example of Waste Management, initiated in 2019 by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to segregate waste at the Pirana Dumpsite which today showcases ‘best practices’ in Waste Management across India.
The need to clear the dumpsite was felt for a very long time due to the health and environmental hazards it posed for the people around it. The unbearable stench and toxic fumes had a widespread effect. It caused hurdles not only to people dwelling around the dumpsite but also the commuters as it was situated at an interlink between major crossroads.
Considering the immediate and acute perils around the dump site, the state government initiated the ‘Pirana Bio-Mining Project’ with the objective of converting waste into usable compost and at the same time ensuring a healthy environment and quality living for the people. For the past three months, 30 thousand metric tons of waste have been processed daily at the site.
The site had 85 acres of land where more than 1.25 lakh metric tonnes of waste from the city was dumped in the past four decades. At present, 35 acres of land have been cleared by processing the waste into compost and other usable materials.
People are breathing a sigh of relief as 95 lakh metric tonnes of waste have been cleared at the landfill by the corporation. This land is priced at ₹2200 crore (approx.)
Innovative Waste Segregation
Trommel machines, with a capacity of segregating 300 tonnes of waste a day, were brought in March this year to the dump site. Currently, 60 Trommel machines of 300 TPD (Tonne per day) capacity, 11 automated segregation machines of 1000 TPD capacity, 63 excavators, and 267 Hyva trucks are operational for waste segregation.
These types of machinery are used at the site to separate materials such as soil, cloth, plastic, iron, wood, etc. from the waste. After segregation, the waste is then crushed and turned into compost and other reusable materials.
The waste segregated from the Pirana dump site is viable in generating revenue for the government. About 70% of inert material is also obtained from the waste. Currently, it is being used in the construction of highways under ‘Dholera Project’ and phase 2 of ‘Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project.
Pirana Bio-Mining Project: A Benchmark for Waste Management
Gujarat’s Ahmedabad is setting an example of innovative waste segregation practices across the country. This unique project today is looked upon and followed by representatives from Kerala, Hyderabad, Pune, Faridabad, Kolkata, and Coimbatore who have visited the site to study the waste management model.
Turning Wasteland into Greenland: Bopal Ecological Park
The Bopal-Ghuma dump site had generated 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of waste in 10 years of its existence. AMC began to clear the wasteland by utilizing machines with a capacity of 1000 tonnes per day in July 2020. In less than 6 months, 6 acres of land has been cleared. Today, the site is turned into a beautiful ecological park which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah. DeshGujarat
