INDI Alliance is going to defeat you this time in Gujarat: Rahul Gandhi to Modi and Shah in Lok Sabha
July 01, 2024
New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today in the parliament said the opposition alliance will defeat BJP in Gujarat.
“And we will defeat you in Gujarat this time. You take it from me in writting, take it in writting, the opposition INDIA (INDI alliance) is going to defeat you in Gujarat.” Rahul said this looking at Prime Minister Narendrabhai Modi and Home Minister Amitbhai Shah, who hail from Gujarat.
Gujarat is going to witness regular election of State assembly next in 2027. Congress has at present 11 MLAs in 182-seat State assembly. Congress in 2022 assembly election in Gujarat did its worst and could win 17 seats only, while the current INDI alliance won 6 seats. The last time Congress won the State assembly election was 1985, nearly 40 years ago. Congress could win one Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat in recently concluded Lok Sabha election after 2009. In five seats by-polls held alongside Lok Sabha polls, Congress could win none. All these five seats were not with BJP previously. Congress has one Rajya Sabha member elected from Gujarat but the number will turn into zero within next couple of years as the term of the member ends.
By saying “INDI Alliance would defeat BJP this time in Gujarat” Rahul is making clear that the next assembly election in Gujarat will be contested by Congress in alliance with Aam Aadmi Party(AAP). In 2022, both Congress and AAP had contested seperately. But figures show, even if both had contested jointly, the BJP tally could be 124 which is 2/3rd majority. Due to divided opposition, BJP could win 156 seats. In recent five seats assembly by-polls, AAP was not in the picture, and it was direct fight between Congress and BJP. However BJP won all five seats with good margins. DeshGujarat
