Rumors of stone pelting create commotion at Ganpati procession in Vadodara
August 25, 2024
Vadodara: A commotion ensued late Friday night during a procession involving a truck-mounted music system transporting a Ganpati idol to its pandal. The police stated that the confusion arose when the music stopped and the truck halted on the road, leading to a misunderstanding that resulted in stone pelting.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) J C Kothiya explained that the incident occurred as the procession was moving from Gorwa ITI to Karodiya, passing through Madhunagar. He stated that the situation escalated when the music was turned off, causing people to shout and question the sudden silence. Someone then falsely claimed that stones had been thrown, leading to panic. Although no stones were actually pelted at the procession, a few people reacted by throwing stones aimlessly after hearing the alarm, Kothiya added. Fortunately, police officers were on the scene and quickly brought the situation under control.
Although no formal complaint has been filed and no case of rioting registered, the police have detained two individuals under the Gujarat Prohibition Act. These individuals were allegedly involved in inciting the crowd based on the false rumor and were found to be intoxicated when brought to the police station. DeshGujarat
