Red Alert in parts of Gujarat for next 24 hours; IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rain

The departing monsoon season is bringing heavy rains to parts of Gujarat, and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for some areas of Gujarat, which may receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours until 8:30 AM tomorrow. After that, some areas will be under an orange alert, while others will be under a yellow warning.

During the last 24 hours until 8:30 AM today, very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in the Gujarat region, particularly Surat. Heavy rainfall was also recorded in isolated places in Surat, Navsari, and Chhota Udepur districts of Gujarat, as well as in the Saurashtra region, notably in Amreli.

As per the IMD bulletin, during the next 24 hours, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli are on red alert as heavy to very heavy rains, with isolated extremely heavy falls, are very likely.

Surat, Dang, Tapi, Navsari, and Amreli are on orange alert as they may receive heavy to very heavy rains, while Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, and Diu are under a yellow warning for heavy rainfall.

On September 27th, heavy to very heavy rains are very likely at isolated places in Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, as well as Bhavnagar in the Saurashtra region. These districts are under an orange alert.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert for heavy rains has been issued for Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Tapi, and Navsari, as well as Amreli, Gir Somnath, and Diu in the Saurashtra region.

On September 28th, heavy rains are very likely at isolated places in Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, as well as Bhavnagar in the Saurashtra region, which are all under a yellow warning.

Synoptic Situation:

  • The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Firozpur, Sirsa, Churu, Ajmer, Mount Abu, Deesa, Surendranagar, Junagadh, and 21°N/70°E.
  • The cyclonic circulation over Vidarbha now lies over north Madhya Maharashtra and the surrounding areas, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwards with height.
  • Northeasterly to easterly winds are prevailing at lower levels over the region.
