Gujarat sets 2047 target to handle 2,000 MMTPA cargo

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, speaking at the Indian Maritime Heritage Conclave 2024 in New Delhi on Wednesday, announced the state’s goal of handling 2,000 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of cargo by 2047, aligning with India’s vision of becoming a developed nation.

During his speech, the CM said, “I am happy to share with you that with 49 ports, Gujarat handles 38% of India’s cargo, which is the highest. It is our goal that by 2047, we will achieve a capacity of 2,000 million metric tonnes per annum in cargo handling. For this, we are focused on infrastructure investments, the development of greenfield ports, and the modernization and expansion of existing facilities. The maritime sector will play a pivotal role in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat.”

The two-day conclave, organized by the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, was inaugurated by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The Chief Minister emphasized Gujarat’s ancient maritime legacy, noting that its 1,600-kilometer coastline has facilitated trade, cultural exchange, and innovation for centuries. He stated that Gujarat’s transformation—from ancient bustling ports to modern high-tech maritime infrastructure—has made it a preferred destination for global investors. Patel also highlighted the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, featuring projects such as a lighthouse museum and an open aquatic gallery, which honor Gujarat’s rich maritime history.

Senior officials from central ministries and representatives from various states also attended the conclave, the statement added.
