Ahmedabad – Gandhinagar Metro: PM Modi likely to flag off Sachivalaya-Mahatma Mandir route on Jan 12

Gandhinagar: Commuters in Ahmedabad and the state capital Gandhinagar are set to receive a major boost in public transport connectivity, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to inaugurate the final route of the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro Rail service connecting Sachivalaya (Secretariat) and Mahatma Mandir on January 12, 2026.

It is learnt that preparations are underway at full pace for the launch of the much-awaited final stretch under Ahmedabad Metro Rail Phase 2. As part of the programme, the Prime Minister is expected to travel by metro from the Old High Court station in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. After reaching Mahatma Mandir, he will attend a scheduled programme involving a German delegation.

Five stations on the new stretch

Under the extended corridor, metro services will begin at five new stations, namely Akshardham, Old Secretariat, Sector-16, Sector-24, and Mahatma Mandir, the final station on the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro Phase 2 route. The extension of this 5.36-kilometre-long route will also enhance metro access to key tourist destinations such as Akshardham Temple and Dandi Kutir.

Multiple trial runs on the route have been successfully completed, with the first trial run held on Vijayadashami last October. The route has also undergone final inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), with approvals reportedly granted after a detailed assessment of safety systems and passenger facilities.

The metro corridor, developed by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), is part of the broader Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro network, which, with this opening, will span 68 kilometres across 54 stations. The expansion is aimed at providing faster, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation to thousands of daily commuters.

The new metro route is expected to directly benefit residents of nearly 20 sectors of Gandhinagar and three surrounding villages. It will significantly ease daily travel for employees working in around 60 government offices located in the old Secretariat complex and Sector-16.

Administration gears up for launch

In view of the Prime Minister’s visit, the district administration has begun a series of coordination and review meetings involving elected representatives, senior officials, and concerned departments. Arrangements related to station decoration, crowd management, and security are being finalised.

Officials believe that once operations begin, the metro service will substantially reduce dependence on private vehicles, easing traffic congestion and improving overall urban mobility in Gandhinagar. DeshGujarat
