Gujarat to get Rhinos, Cheetah, Wolves

Ahmedabad’s Kankaria zoo will in near future get a pair of Rhinos and Cheetahs.

According to Chief Wildlife Warden of Gujarat Dr. S.C.Pant, the Gujarat government is going to get a pair of Rhinos from the state of Uttar Pradesh in exchange of Gujarat Lions. Gujarat is also going to get five Rhinos from Bihar. At present, Kankaria zoo is making arrangements for set up an area for Rhinos.

Gujarat is also going to get a pair of African Cheetahs from London zoo in exchange of a pair of Lions. At present Gujarat has only one Cheetah in Junagadh zoo which is old.

According to Dr Pant, one of the best ideas to counter growing population of Nilgai which is creating menace for farmers is conservation and introduction of Wolves. At present, wolves are near extinction in Gujarat and they are found only in some areas of Saurashtra and Kutch. The state has got a pair of wolves from Jaipur. Through careful breeding, wolves will be introduced in the areas of Nilgai menace.
