Punamben Jat:Kutch

Ex corporator of Gandhidham, Punam Veljibhai Jat is primary member of BJP for last 15 years. She is Bachelor of Science(BSc) and runs coaching class in Gandhidham where she lives for last 17 years. She is involved in Nehru Yuva Kendra activities. Her husband V.K.Jat works in Kandla Port Trust. Punamben’s Mumbai based father Ramkumar Sanjot was connected with BJP since the time of Jansangh.

How she got the ticket

Kutch BJP’s sitting MP Pushpadan Gadhvi has not got the ticket this time because after delimitation exercise Kutch seat has been declared reserved for SC candidate. BJP wanted to field one woman candidate from Saurashtra/Kutch area. It was necessary to select ‘no tension’ type of winnable seat for woman candidate. The party zeroed down on the Kutch seat. The search literally began for SC woman candidate available there and discovery of Modi was Punamben Jat, thanks to old Jansangh time relations with her father.

Rival candidate is stronger, but not his party

Punam Jat’s rival candidate is Congress man Valjibhai Danicha. Personally Valjibhai is more senior. He was MLA from Mundra. He is originally a Kutchi. But because Valjibhai is contesting on Congress ticket, he has grim chances of winning the election. If he can project Punamben as a weaker candidate, Valjibhai would be able to get some more votes.

Weak candidate Punamben will win, thanks to strong party she belongs to

Look at the political scenario in Kutch. Assembly elections were held just before a year and half in December 2007 in which six out of seven assembly seats were captured by the BJP. BJP is ruling 9 Taluka Panchayats out of total 10 in Kutch Lok Sabha constituency area. BJP has excellent root level organizational set up in Kutch. Development works of Modi government will also help Punamben in winning this election. Due to all these strong factors, weak candidate Punamben will win.

Jayshriben Patel:Mehsana

Jayshreeben Patel is Chairman of Gujarat women commission. After sudden death of former Chairman Shobhnaben Patel, Jayshriben was appointed on this post thanks to her proximity with state revenue minister Anandiben Patel. Jashriben is former president of BJP Mahila Morcha. She was appointed Mahila Morcha president by Purushottam Rupala in February, 2007. Jayshreeben belongs to Palanpur. She is from 84 Gam Patel Samaj. Being a Chairman of Gujarat Women Commission Jayshreeben had raised the issue of alleged ill-treatment to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur by the Mumbai police. As on December 2009 there are 727 cases pending before Gujarat Women Commission.

Thanks to BJP’s “Google search” for Patel woman in Mehsana, she got the ticket

According to party’s strategy one woman candidate was to be selected for north Gujarat’s easily winnable one seat. The party zeroed down on Mehsana. Next task was to find Patel woman to neutralize Congress’s Patel candidate effect. Thus Jayshriben Patel came into picture. She is Chairman of Women Commission and ex-Mahila Morcha president and sister of Anandiben patel. What’s more Modi could expect?

BJP’s Nitinbhai had lost Mehsana seat in last election

In last election, Nitin Patel was BJP candidate from Mehsana. Nitinbhai lost the election and later fought assembly election in which he won and became Cabinet Minister. Now Nitinbhai is very well settled not seeking to go to the parliament on BJP ticket.

Jayshriben’s Rival is sitting MP who is neither strong nor popular

Jayshriben Patel’s rival candidate is Congress man Jivabhai Patel who is sitting MP on Mehsana seat. A rich man from Surat, he was elected in last Lok Sabha election for the first time. He is not very much popular or strong in his constituency.

While Kalol assembly area where Congress MLA has been elected went to Gandhinagar constituency, BJP’s strong hold Unjha assembly area which was earlier part of Patan Lok Sabha seat added to Mehsana Lok Sabha. thanks to the delimitation process. This has made Mehsana seat safest in north Gujarat for the BJP.

Just before a year and half when Gujarat assembly elections were held in December 2007, all the seats in Mehsana Lok Sabha constituency were captured by the BJP.

In last election, Congress candidate Jivabhai won Mehsana seat due to Thakor community’s pro-Congress voting. But this time, Thakor strongmen Punjaji Thakor and Natuji Thakor are happy with the BJP because Natuji was made Rajya Sabha MP last year and Punjaji has been appointed Chairman of Thakor Koli Development Board. Thus Thakors too are happy this time with the BJP.

Thus it is a cake walk situation for Jayshriben in Mehsana. She will win with comfortably good margin.

Darshna Jardosh:Surat

Darshna Jardosh started her political career as BJP’s ward committee member. She is Gujarat BJP Mahila Morcha’s General Secretary for last three years. 48 year old Darshnaben is Bachelor of Commerce(B.Com). She is also Sangeet Visharad. She was director in women bank in 1987. She joined BJP in 1988. In 1999 She became Surat BJP Mahila Morcha president. In 2000 she was elected as a corporator. She became chairperson of various municipal committees in 2002. Her name was discussed for the position of Surat’s Mayor but finaly more experienced candidate was chosen for that post.In 2005 she again was appointed as Surat BJP Mahila Morcha president.She became Gujarat BJP Mahila Morcha General Secretory in 2006.

Kashiram Rana out, Darshna Jardosh in

Sitting Surat MP Kashiram Rana’s exit was confirm because he was Keshubhai Patel supporter at the time of rebel against Modi. Also because he was aspiring to become Gujarat’s Chief Minister once upon a time and number of other factors. BJP wanted to allot one winnable strong hold seat’s ticket to woman in South Gujarat. The choice was either Navsari or Surat. For Modi, it was necessary to choose C.R.Patil for Navsari. Thus Surat became a seat of choice for a woman candidate. Darshnaben is the most well known woman face of BJP in Surat. After positive report received from Anandiben Patel, Modi zeroed down on Jardosh.

Surat is BJP’s no tension seat, Darshnaben will win:Beware of sabotage however!

All the assembly segments of Surat Lok Sabha constituency are with BJP. Surat Municipal Corporation is with BJP. Even after Diamond industry’s problems, Textile Industry severely hit by slow down. Large scale migration of voters from Surat to Saurashtra, Jardosh will win because BJP is more or less still stronger in Surat. However BJP will have to cautious because sabotage is possible due to some unhappy leaders and middle rank workers.
