Cheti Chand celebrations cancled in Gujarat following Mayaben's arrestThe Sindhi community in Gujarat has canceled all public functions to celebrate their biggest annual festival, a Sindhi new year day Cheti Chand. The decision has been taken to protest the arrest of Maya Kodnani who belongs to Sindhi community.

Chairman of the All-India Sindhi chamber of commerce and industry, Lakshmandas Rohra said, “Following the arrest of our leader, we are not going to celebrate Cheti Chand on Saturday.”

The community had planned to take out a procession with around 150 trucks from Panchkuva and Naroda areas in Ahmedabad. After Gujarat earthquake, it has happened for the first time that the 50 year old Cheti Chand procession has been canceled.

“We will just visit temples, have prashad and perform religious rituals with simplicity. Mayaben always used to take part in the procession. This year in her absence there is no charm to celebrate the things,” said Nanakram Sindhi, a trader.
