DLF to exit from Gandhinagar IT SEZ
Ahmedabad, 22 May, 2009
Here is a piece of bad news for thousands of Gujarati IT guys(many of them DeshGujarat readers) who are staying outside the Gujarat for job purpose and eying some positive development in Gujarat in connection with IT related opportunities so that they can come back.
Real estate giant DLF wants it’s RS 850 crore Gandhinagar based IT SEZ de-notified due to slowdown in the economy and liquidity crunch in overall industry.
The project was to come up over 25 acres at Gandhinagar opposite Infocity.
This will be the second IT SEZ that Gujarat would have lost. Earlier, the state government had, in a huff, canceled the 26-acre land allocated to Satyam in Gandhinagar after the scam in the company came to light.
The MoU for the DLF SEZ was signed during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ IT Summit (VGGIIT)-2006 and the foundation stone for it was laid by the chief minister. The SEZ was notified in June 2008.
In July 2007 DLF had announced that it’s Gujarat project would be completed in around 18 months and creat a pool of job opportunities for 30,000 people.
Apart from Gandhinagar, DLF has also reqested same for it’s Rai(Sonepat, Haryana), Kolata(West Bengal) and Bhubaneshwar(Orissa) SEZ. The size of all the four SEZ is little over 10 hectares.
The board of approval (BoA) in the commerce ministry will consider on June 2 the request of cash-starved DLF to withdraw these four of its IT/ITeS special economic zones (SEZ) projects.
The company said that the global economic downturn and the IT sector slowdown have affected demand for office space, so they approached the government for de-notification.
