Following the illicit liquor tragedy, in one more welcome step, the Police department on Monday evening, ordered ‘punishment transfer’ of 39 ‘vahivatdaars’ from 34 police stations in Ahmedabad.
The ‘Vahivatdaar’ cops have been transferred to non-executive posts such as police control room operator and special branch cop. They are transferred at the locations where they cannot earn bribe/hafta money.
‘Vahivatdaars’ are police-station level brokers of bribe. They come from lower ranks such as Constable and Head Constable. They manage the bribe network by collecting the hafta money from the bootleggers. The ‘Vahivatdaar’ constable is contact person for bootleggers to pay hafta money. The ‘Vahivatdaar’ passes the bribe money to higher rank after taking his cut. The ‘Vahivatdaars’ are like a chain between the police officers and bootleggers.
The ‘Vahivatdaar’ constables from Ahmedabad’s 34 police stations, have been now shunted of to districts like Banaskantha, Godhra, Valsad, Dahod, Bharuch, Kutch, Ptan, Amrelin Bhavnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh and Jamnagar.
