The Bharatiya Janata Party has lost Junagadh Municipal Corporation(JMC) election. The Congress party will rule JMC for five years. The election was held on Sunday. Total 162 candidates were in fray. The results were declared today morning.

Out of total 51 seats, the Congress party has secured 26 seats, while the BJP has got 21 seats, just five seats less than the rival. BSP won 3 seats, while one seat went to independent candidate.

Looking at the result, it is visible that the BSP cut the BJP votes in many areas and made a victory easier for the Congress.

The Congress party panels won the election in ward no. 1-1-7-8-10-15-16 and 17 while the BJP panels are victorious in ward no. 5-6-9-11-12-13-14. Each ward has three seats. Ex central minister Bhavnaben Chikhaliya and Mahendra Mashru won the election with their panel.

This is second setback to the BJP in Saurashtra region after loosing its stronghold Rajkot seat in Lok Sabha elections early this year. In Junagadh, the BJP had received lesser votes than the Congress in Lok Sabha election also. However other areas of the district voted for the BJP which made BJP candidate victorious. Junagadh’s Lok Sabha and assembly seats are with the BJP.
