The Gujarat Government plans to start two new medical colleges in Ahmedabad by next year to add 300 more seats.
The government plans to start a college at Ahmedabad based Sola Civil Hospital under a charitable trust and another college at Asarwa Swadeshi Mill Compound by Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute(GCRI).The colleges each have 150 seats and a proposal is at present under process at Medical Council of India.
As the Health Minister has said earlier this year, a medical college in Swadeshi Mill Compound would be world class and would have ultra modern facilities. The medical college would have 150 under graduate seats and 50 post graduate seats. The college would have seats for cancer study.
Sola Civil hospital located at SG Highway in Ahmedabad has 100 beds set up which would be extended as per the government planning(one bed-one medical seat is MCI norm).
Ahmedabad already has three medical colleges: B.J. Medical College at Civil Hospital Asarwa campus, NHL Medical College at V S Hospital campus and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Medical College at L G Hospital in Maninagar . These three medical colleges all together offer 550 seats.
Two more then after?
Just last month it was announced that Employees State Insurance Corporation(ESIC) would have its medical college in Ahmedabad attached with its Bapunagar general hospital. Also the Railway Ministry has proposed to start medical college attached with Railway hospitals including a railway hospital in Ahmedabad.
