Saurashtra’s Amreli town observed total strike on Saturday, demanding strong police actions against five persons including two sitting Municipality members who allegedly harass and threaten the Municipality staff frequently.
The strike declared by Amreli Municipality Workers Union is supported by the local commerce association, Rotary Club, Genius Club, Lions Club, Kalapi Group and number of other local organizations.
Workers demand that strong police actions should be taken immediately against five persons against whom the Municipality President has filed complaint. The five persons are; Raju Amad Bilakhiya, Mehboob Qureshi, Shabir alias Gadabo Arab, Irfan Ahmed and Pintu Mandora. Both Raju and Mehboob are sitting members of the Municipality.
Mehboob, a sitting member of the Municipality, earlier served Amreli’s Tax department. His wife Shehnazben Qureshi was President of Amreli Municipality. The Municipality has started a probe of corruption that involves Qureshis.
The workers submitted a memorandum twice to the collector demanding police actions against the five persons. The workers also rallied twice demanding actions but nothing worked. The workers had to call strike today because no police action was taken according to them.
