Modi in Amravati where President’s son is Congress candidate

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi addressed BJP election rally in Amravati on last day of Maharashtra assembly election campaign.

Modi had earlier addressed rallies in Nashik and Kolhapur.

Amravati has become a prestigious seat as President Pratibha Patil’s son Rajendra alias Raosaheb Shekhawat is contesting on Congress ticket here.

BJP has fielded Dr.Pradeep Shingore on this seat.

Congress rebel and two time MLA, ex-Minister of State for Public Works Sunil Deshmukh is contesting as an independent candidate on this seat. Deshmukh, the ‘guardian minister’ for Amravati district says that “the husband of the President of India misused Rashtrapati Bhavan and pressured the Congress leadership for securing ticket for his son from Amravati. I am fighting on my own therefore.”

Modi attacks Congress in Amravati speech

Attacking the Congress on the campaign trail here, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi charged it with failing to remove poverty despite having ruled the country for most of the years after independence.

“Nehru-Gandhi family member was Prime Minister for most of the years after independence, even then why poverty remains in the country today?” Modi asked voters at a huge public meeting.

The meeting was organised to campaign for BJP-SS candidates — Pradip Shingore (Amravati constituency) and Sudhir Suryawanshi (Badnera) — at Science Core Ground in Amravati.

Criticising Congress, Modi said the Centre should tell people what it has done for them.
