In a major decision the government of Gujarat has taken eight government and six private medical colleges of state under newly formed Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society. This move has turned Gujarat’s all government medical colleges into self finance institutions. This move will completely eliminate existing 50% quota reserved for students of other states in medical colleges of Gujarat.

Speaking about this important development Gujarat Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said: “Presently there are 750 post graduate medical seats in the state. Out of them 375 are reserved for students of other states. Now onwards this 375 seats will also go to deserving Gujarat students.”

Vyas further said:”This step will be also helpful to medical colleges, as they will not need to seek permission of related government department for recruiting of new staff any more. Medical colleges would be able to appoint Consulting expert or Practitioner doctor as part time lecturer.”

“This would end the situation where Gujarat students had to go to other states paying higher fees due to lack of seats in their home state,” Vyas added.

While Gujarat Health Minister would be a patron of Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society, Minister of state for Health will be a vice patron, Principal Secretary of Health department will become Chairman of the Society.
