About 500 farmers led by Mahuva BJP MLA Dr. Kanubhai Kalsaria were detained in Ahmedabad today morning for holding demonstrations against a proposed cement plant of Nirma company in Saurashtra’s Mahuva block, contending that it would affect the agriculture in the area.
The demonstration led by Mahuva BJP MLA Kanubhai Kalsaria was held opposite the Gujarat High Court.
The proposed plant of the Nirma group has been mired in controversy on the issue of land acquisition and mining of limestone which will, as farmers contend, affect the agriculture in the area.
The 214-hectare plant coming up at a cost of Rs 1,400 crore will require a mining lease of over 8,000 acre, which will displace some 5,000 families and 30,000 people according to protestors.
The demonsrators choose Ahmedabad’s S.G.Highway for protest as Nirma College, Nirma Company’s owner Karsanbhai Patel’s resident and Gujarat High Court all-three are located here.
