Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh requesting him to that the Government of India should give utmost priority to freedom of 97 Gujarat sailors of 7 ships kidnapped by Somalian pirates.
“In the past when such incidents happened, we informed central government’s Shipping Director General and requested him to do enough to prevent repetition of such incidents. However the government of India has not taken enough actions in this direction, because of which Gujarat’s historical trade and commerce relation with African countries is in danger. The government of India should employ Indian Navy and Coast Guard to ensure safety of Indian ships that are involved mostly in transportation of agricultural goods. Safeguard of Indian ships should be a priority of the central government,” Modi said in his note.
Chief Minister also requested central government to prepare a policy for safety of Indian ships through existing central committee appointed by the central government for welfare of Indian sailors.”
