MV Palanga, a ship that waited 13 years for death at Alang
Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat, 28 April, 2010
A Russian Ship MV Palanga arrived at Gujarat’s Alang coast in 1997 for demolition. But the procedure to demolish this ship could be initiated only yesterday – after 13 long years, thanks to a case pending about it in the Supreme Court of India.
Usually when a ship arrives at Alang coast, it takes one month for government clearances and the procedure to pull out its parts starts immediately. However the Russian ship MV Palanga was stuck in court battle since 1997 and therefore couldn’t be attended for 13 long years!
Now recently, after a ship breaker committed Rs 2.70 crore guarantee, the Supreme Court has permitted to attend the ship. Thus the work was started yesterday on this ship. The ship is parked in plot no. 144 owned by Shri Jatinbhai Jodadiya.
