Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat, 26 April, 2010

10th Acharya of Terapanth sect of Jainism Shri Mahapragya passed away on Sunday at 2:52 in Rajasthan’s Churu-Sardar Shahar due to heart attack. He was 90. Acharyaji complained about chest pain at around 2:00 pm after which doctors were called. However he couldn’t survive. Acharyaji was in Churu for Chaturmas. He had arrived here on 27th of April. His cremation will be held on Monday in Sardar Shahar.

As news of Acharyaji’s demise spread, his followers gathered at Terapanth Bhavans including a bhavan in Ahemdabad. The traders of Ahmedabad’s Maskati market, New cloth market and Sakar bazar will shut down their business on Monday.

In a condolence message released on Sunday evening, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said Acharyaji had special feelings for Gujarat.

Acharya Mahapragya had taken diksha when he was 10 with his widow mother. In Terapanth tradition, he was the only monk who became Acharya when previous Acharya was living, thanks to his knowledge and extra ordinary character.
