What has Children day done for the child welfare:Modi
Mumbai, 5 June, 2010
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi criticized Children’s Day, asking what has it done for the child welfare, on Saturday, Jun 5. Modi was addressing at a convention of Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states on the outskirts of Uttan city.
“Jawaharlal Nehru was said to be very fond of kids and his birthday has been christened as Children’s Day. Kids called him
‘Nehru Chacha’ and it brings images of a benevolent Nehru flooding our minds. But what good has it done to the kids?” Modi asked, blazing a new controversy.
He asked whether Children’s Day have refurbished the image of the poverty-striken children, losing their precious years of childhood. He also asked whether it has done anything to shed a tear for these children who struggle to get a square meal a day, when the Children’s Day is celebrated.
“Let me contrast it with Lal Bahadur Shastri. He coined the slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ which electrified farmers and jawans. Shastriji, unlike Nehru, was not a charismatic leader, yet his tenure saw India producing record foodgrains,” Modi said.
