Ban on tokens of religious faith: Fancy whim of Amdavad school

Tuesday’s DNA has published a shocking story about Ahmedabad’s school.

According to a story, Ahmedabad’s Eklavya school issued an order last week asking students from nursery to class 12 not to wear religious lockets, amulets or other tokens of religious faith to school. While many children reluctantly obeyed the order, those who refused has their lockets and amulets snipped off and thrown into dustbins.

Even teachers felt bad when they were ordered to snip off the amulets which they had to follow. ” I could see tears well up in the eyes of the children when I snipped off the amulets on school authority’s order,” said a teacher to DNA.

Fancy whim!

Nowadays schools are behaving increasingly on administrator/owner’s fancy whims. Every school has its own set of beliefs and laws. Sometime law of the land does not work in campuses, though campuses are standing very much on the same land. We have heard a lot about Christian Missionary schools banning bindi, bangles etc, but the Ekalavya school is run by Sunil Handa. How one can ban faith in this country, which is integral part of everybody’s life here! How a Swaminarayan follower child could be told to remove his ‘kanthi’? How a Brahmin child could be forced to remove his Janoi? If a Muslim child’s parents want him to wear Tabiz and child too is happy about it, how come the school authorities remove it?
