The story of Vadodara airport: Only soil testing happened after 2.5 years, and we want to beat China!!

Conceived design of a new airport building

Vadodara, 2 December 2011

Two years after the stone laying ceremony completed(on February 26, 2009) for new airport terminal of Vadodara by then civil aviation minister Praful Patel, the work has not completed yet.

In his speech (on February 26, 2009) then minister had promised that construction of new terminal will be complete in 17 months!

But now lately there are some positive indications that the much delayed project would see light of the day.

Shri Balakrishna Shukla, Member of Parliament, Vadodara who raised this issue number of times at appropriate forums has finally received a letter from Civil Aviation Ministry informing that the construction related work of the new terminal is already in progress and is likely to be completed by the end of 2012.

On 9 May, 2011 Shri Shukla wrote a letter to the PM Manamohan Singh and the cabinet minister Vayalar Ravi asking to begin the terminal’s work.

In reply, Shri Shukla was told told that the work of the terminal has been given to a firm from Delhi. The site mobilization work has been completed by this agency. The land site of the new terminal is very soft and muddy, therefore the pile foundation work is planned and soil testing is going on presently.

So the fact is that, just soil testing is going on after a period of over 2.5 years! And we are dreaming to bear China!

In nut shell

-The contract to construct the new airport building in the city has been awarded to Messers Kashyap & Sons, said Vayalar Ravi Union Civil Aviation Minister, in a letter to Vadodara MP Balkrishna Shukla who had taken up the issue of delay in the construction of the new building with the minister.

-In his communication to Ravi, Shukla had said that the then Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel had laid the foundation stone of the new terminal building in February 2009 promising the construction work would be completed within 18 months. “Since then 33 months passed and the project remained where it stood in February 2009,” Shukla said.

-Aviation minister Ravi has assured Shukla that the company would start construction work in near future as land needed for it is already in possession and testing of land was being carried out as it is soft land. The new integrated terminal building will have an area of 18,120 square meter and it will be a glass and steel structure. It will have peak hour passenger handling capacity of 700 and annual handling capacity of 7.30 lakh.
