Modi’s reply to Ahmed Miya on “Sultan” remark

Ahmedabad, 9 December 2012

Addressing a campaign rally at Pavi Jetpur today, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi reacted to Congress leader Ahmed Patel’s remark describing Modi as ‘sultan.’

“I said him Ahmed Miya just for once, and Congress people felt bad. And since I told him Ahmed Miya, his face has lost shine. And yesterday Ahmed Miya said that Narendra Modi is sultan.”

“Ahmed Miya alias Ahmedbhai alias Babubhai…… in his case everything is alias alias… it is natural that you are using such words, because Sultans take birth in dynastic culture…. Grandfather as PM, and his daughter PM, and then her son PM……. (such) Sultani exists in dynastic culture. And you have spent your entire life in serving (this) Sultani, therefore you are not able to think beyond Sultani. We are standing here because we are elected by people. We are not here due to some throne offered to us due to dynasty. We have been given chance by people. Shriman Ahmed Miya if you had basic understanding of foundations of democracy, the word Sultan would never have come out from your mouth!”

Ahmed Patel on Saturday had described chief minister Narendra Modi as ‘sultan’, a veiled attack on his style of functioning.

“People in Gujarat don’t want a sultan, but are looking for a genuine people’s representative as a ruler. Modi is working like a sultan,” Ahmed Patel had said addressing a rally in Jambusar.

Miya is used to show respect:Modi

In the last rally on Sunday in Ahmedabad’s Jivraj Park, Shri Modi said that in Muslims, the word ‘Miya’ is used to give honor. Even wife addresses her husband as Miya to show love and respect. Modi said, “I said Ahmed Miya wants to become CM, and he got angry.”
