Congress party has captured power in Kheda district panchayat with thin but clear majority. Congress won 22 seats in Kheda district panchayat poll, while BJP won 18 seats and an independent candidate won one seat.
Kheda district panchayat was earlier ruled by the BJP. However President Rakesh Rao left BJP to contest Matar poll on Gujarat Parivartan Party ticket.
Kheda district is represented by former Chief Minister and leader of opposition Shankersinh Vaghela in assembly, and Gujarat’s only cabinet minister in centre Dinsha Patel in parliament. Congress did well even in recently concluded assembly polls in this district.
The party has retained its power in north Gujarat’s Banaskantha district panchayat. While Congress won 28 seats, BJP won 26 seats in Banaskantha district panchayat polls. Election for one seat is pending due to death of a candidate. Banaskantha is represented in Lok Sabha by Congress candidate Mukesh Gadhvi for last two terms. Even in the assembly elections, Banaskantha had offered good number of seats to Congress.
Elections were held last Sunday for Banaskantha and Kheda district panchayats, Banaskantha district’s 12 Taluka panchayats, Kheda district’s 2 Taluka panchayats, Gandhinagar Taluka panchayat and few district/taluka panchayat seats(by-polls).

Out of total 15 Taluka panchayts, 9 go to BJP while 5 to Congress. One Taluka panchayat is under tie.
