Ahmedabad, 14 March 2013
Though majority Congress men were elected in the recent elections, Kheda district panchayat is now ruled by BJP from the first day.
There are total 41 seats in Kheda district panchayat. Of them Congress won 22 seats in recently concluded elections while BJP got 18 and independent got one seat.
Today, the post-election meeting to elect the President and Vice President of Kheda district panchayat was convened, in which BJP received support of one independent member and two Congress members and thus reached 21 mark to elect Jayantilal Sodha Parmar as President and Kanubhai Dabhi as Vice President of district panchayat. Congress had strength of 22 members, but two members switched over to BJP. BJP had 18 members. Support of one independent and two Congress members awarded ruling position to party.
This is repeat of Banaskantha, another district that went to poll with Kheda. In Banaskantha too, Congress had majority post-elections, but BJP secured power yesterday through same technique.
Kheda is located in central Gujarat that is represented by two union ministers. The only Cabinet minister from Gujarat in centre Dinsha Patel is MP Lok Sabha from Kheda. Bharatsinh Solanki another minister in centre represents neighboring Anand district.
