Independent MLA returns home, BJP now enjoys 2/3rd majority in Gujarat assembly

Vadodara, 26 June 2013

Ketan Inamdar, who won the last Assembly election from Savli assembly constituency in Vadodara district as a rebel candidate, today returned to BJP.

With this, BJP’s strength in 182-member Gujarat assembly has reached 120 mark, which is clear 2/3rd majority. This number is more than the results of last two general elections that were held in year 2007 and 2012.

It should be mentioned here that Keshubhai Patel-led Gujarat Parivartan Party’s MLA Nalinbhai Kotadia who represents Dhari seat in Amreli district has joined BJP recently. He is technically not a BJP MLA, but he votes for BJP in the assembly. Thus the effective strength of the party in assembly house is 121.

BJP had secured 115 seats last year in Gujarat assembly general elections. BJP won four seats in recently concluded by-polls.

“I have joined BJP to strengthen the hands of Chief Minister Narendra Modi who is heading the poll campaign committee of the party and expected to play a more important role at the national level,” he said.

Inamdar had contested as an independent candidate after BJP refused him nomination.
