Congress today criticized the Andhra Pradesh BJP’s move to collect Rs. 5 as registration fee from those wanting to attend Shri Narendra Modi’s 11 August rally at LB stadium in Hyderabad. The BJP has decided to collect the fund through this rally for Uttarakhand flood victims.
Congress leader Manish Tewari today morning in a statement said, “The BJP has decided to impose a listening tax.Whatever the tax is, I think reflects their own appreciation of the market value. But that’s not the question at hand. The question is that having imposed a listening tax, what we need to ask them is that when will they impose a speaking tax on 1.2 billion Indians. Is this the monetization of democracy, or is this a precursor to fascism. I think that’s the question which India and Indians need to ponder over. In a lighter way, you have babas charging anywhere between a hundred Rupees to a lakh of Rupees for their pravachans. We go to see movies these days, good bad or ugly, you pay 100 Rupees for a ticket. Good theater charges 1000 Rupees also, or rather expensive theaters. And then you have a political party deciding to benchmark its own value. Is this the market discovery that they have been able to come up with? But I guess lets still does not distract from the fundamental question, and the fundamental question is, is this the method in which democracy should be monetized.”
