September 24, 2013

Surat, 24 September 2013
The situation of flood in Surat is likely to normalize, as the discharge of water from Ukai dam is now half compared to Monday, and water level at Surat causeway is also going down.

The city people were literally praying God to stop the rain today morning. Flood water in low lying areas, gutter water on some other areas(because flood gates were closed) and added to this constant heavy rain fall – this was the recipe of trouble for city of Surat on Tuesday morning.
Schools and colleges remained shut. Some major roads were declared closed for traffic. In some areas like Pal, the apartments couldn’t get power or water supply due to water logging.

The only good thing that the city experienced was receding of water in the afternoon.
Next will be a massive cleaning job in which not only the Surat Municipal Corporation, but volunteers shall also participate hugely. The health department will also need to be on alert mode for at least a week after the city is back to normal.

Update:
“Tomorrow will be a normal day,” said Surat Municipal Commissioner Shri Das in telephonic talk to DeshGujarat at 4.00 pm on Tuesday. He said water level has been down by 7-8 ft already, and it will go further down in next few hours. He said all flood gates that were earlier closed are now opened. He said the Surat Municipal Corporation(SMC) has formed 200 teams for cleaning and sanitation job to tackle the post-flood situation.
