Gujarati new year day - the most important day of year in Gujarat tomorrow

Ahmedabad, 3 November 2013

Gujarati new year – Vikram Samvat 2070 will begin tomorrow (on November 4, 2013).

The first day of Gujarati new year is popularly called ‘Bestu varsh’. It is the first day of Kaartak – the first month of Gujarati calendar.

In any part of Gujarat, you can spot hundreds of people dressed in best pair of cloths visiting nearest mandir in the morning. Any mandir attracts 10 times more visitors on this day in morning itself.

People visit the places of close relatives, neighbors and friends to greet one another ‘Saal mubaarak’, ‘Nutan varshaa abhinandan’ and ‘Happy new year’.

Traditional snacks like Sunvaali, Ghughraa, Mathiyaa etc are offered to visitors on new year day.

Almost all businesses remain closed not only on a new year day, but also during next two three days. Shops and markets are reopened only on Labh Paancham – the fifth day of new Gujarati year.

Those settled in other city/town for work make sure to remain present at home on this day.

Houses are decorated with lighting, oil lamps and rangoli.
